MacHeist is LIVE!

March 2nd, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | No Comments | Filed in Technology

MacHeist is at it again! Grab their current nanoBundle for $19.99, which goes to charities.

MacHeist bundles are bundles of Mac software from small developers, and the bundles are only available for 7 days. The developers get together with MacHeist to offer their software at steeply discounted prices, and these are REAL versions of the software, not trial versions.

For example, the software called RipIt is usually $19.99, but you can get it as part of the $19.99 MacHeist bundle and get all of the other software too.

7 days left… get the bundle while you can!

Scam alert: fake “weather” pages.

February 28th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | No Comments | Filed in Etcetera

I just found out that the usually excellent OpenDNS is actually *not* catching these, unfortunately.

If you go to a site expecting to find a weather forecast, and it asks you for your cell phone number, DO NOT enter your information. It will sign you up for an “entertainment service” billed at $9.99 per month.

Below are a couple of screenshots of such scam websites. Please be careful, and do not give websites like this your phone number, because they do not need it for any other reason than to scam you. Third party billing charges like that are extremely difficult to get removed by wireless carriers.

The first example that we encountered:

Here’s yet another example:

Here are some legitimate weather service websites:
Wunderground
WXNation
National Weather Service
Weatherbonk
Weatherbug
The Weather Channel

Once again, Google has a website on how you can help after the recent earthquake in Chile.

Apple using child labor?

February 27th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | No Comments | Filed in Etcetera

Many articles out today about a report that Apple did which found out some underage workers were employed by third party manufacturers. I’ve read through several of the articles and wanted to point out a key facts.

* Out of all of the suppliers audited, only 11 underage workers were discovered.
* The workers were 15 years old.
* The legal age to work is 16.
* Apple is one of very few companies that even do such audits.

The Bloomberg article has a little more information. This isn’t an instance of some massive underground child labor operation happening, and it appears to be fairly isolated. AppleInsider reports “In reality, Apple stepped in to police a situation it had no legal responsibility to address. “We required a review of all employment records for the year as well as a complete analysis of the hiring process to clarify how underage people had been able to gain employment [at facilities operated by contractors],” Apple stated in the report.

At one facility, Apple discovered that management had actually been falsifying records to make it appear to be compliant with the company’s standards.

“When we investigated,” the report notes, “we uncovered records and conducted worker interviews that revealed excessive working hours and seven days of continuous work.” Apple subsequently terminated all of its contracts with the factory.”

I think that it should be standard policy for American companies to do such audits of suppliers in foreign nations, and I applaud Apple’s efforts for doing so.
