Apple iPad – first impressions.

January 27th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | 4 Comments | Filed in Technology

After rampant speculation and endless rumors, the Apple iPad was announced today and journalists are getting their first hands-on shots with it. The device will start shipping in 60 days, with a 3G capable one shipping 30 days after that.

When you think about it, the Amazon Kindle DX is $469 from Amazon.com, and the iPad starts off at $499 for a 16gb version. The iPad appears to do a whole lot more. It really does seem like a larger version of the iPod Touch, though, but that might be the appeal for many people. I love my iPhone but it’s a little tedious to do a lot of web browsing on, but I don’t need another MacBook. It’s the product that fits right in the middle. I’m interested in one because I could use something light to go in my backpack that has 3G capabilities. I’m interested in an ebook reader, and the iPad looks like it’ll be the right size. It’s also nice that the AT&T data plans are only $29.99/mo for unlimited data and there are no contracts required.

Cool:
* Size
* Screen
* Excellent portable media player & email device

Cons:
* Maybe a little bit expensive
* Duplicates some of the functions that my iPhone has.

It’s too bad that AT&T isn’t allowing users to tether the iPad to their iPhones via Bluetooth. After all, I’m already paying for the iPhone data plan, so why can’t I just use it for the iPad? Maybe this is something that will change in the future, but it’d be nice to have at launch.

What do y’all think about it? Interested in it so far?

My iPhone wishlist so far

January 26th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

This list will probably grow as time goes on, but my biggest wish for an iPhone enhancement right now is for the ability to collapse IMAP folders in Mail. I have folders of archives and I’d like to be able to collapse the parent folder so I don’t have to see them all.

Apple? Please? :) it might be a simple thing to so. Mail in Mac OS X has been able to do this since the beginning.

Google Voice for iPhone now here!

January 26th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

Well, sort of. As of today, Google Voice users can visit Google Voice with Safari on their iPhone and use it that way. It functions like a web application. I just tested it a few minutes ago and it worked as expected. It does display a dialog, but if you press “Call” it will do just that.

Also to note is that there seems to be yet another Google Voice access number. This new one has an Austin, TX area code. The previous one had a Carlsbad, CA area code. I don’t know if it cycles through them at random or tries to use one that’s physically closer to you, but they might use several to keep people from adding them as a favorite on MyFaves (T-Mobile) or A-List (AT&T) and getting unlimited minutes.

Give it a shot and let us know how it’s working for you!

Apple Event: January 27th, 2010

January 26th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

Apple is hosting a “media event” on Wednesday, January 27th, 2010. There is a lot of speculation about what’s going to be announced. Rumours include:

* An “Apple Tablet” device, named iPad or iSlate (or maybe something else entirely)
* New iPhones
* iPhone OS v 4.0
* Other US carriers to carry the iPhone

What’s your favorite rumor so far? Do you know of any other rumors to add? Either way, it should be interesting. The stock is certainly reacting to this event and Apple’s reports of an all time revenue record. “Apple sold 3.36 million Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing a 33 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 8.7 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 100 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 21 million iPods during the quarter, representing an eight percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.”

An additional 3,600,000 new Macs were sold this past quarter. Wow!

Going to Miami: Saints & Colts!

January 24th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Life

Couple of fantastic games today…

Minnesota Vikings: 28
New Orleans Saints: 31

The Saints won it with a field goal in overtime. Awesome game played by both teams. Wow.

Indianapolis Colts: 30
New York Jets: 17

The Jets had it going in the first half, but the second half was all Colts. Also a really good game. Congrats to both the Colts & the Saints!
