This is cool.

Support for video outputs. I’m surprised that the movie studios let that happen, but it’s a pretty cool feature.

OpenDNS hit by a denial of service attack.

May 18th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | 3 Comments | Filed in Technology

The DNS provider OpenDNS was apparently hit with a large “DDoS” (Distributed Denial of Service) attack, causing them to have to reroute quite a bit of traffic. We use OpenDNS and were having problems getting pages to load, but that’s about it. One article notes that people “flocked to Google’s Public DNS” but doesn’t mention that they’re equally susceptible to the same kind of attack.

Edit: Oops, the quote he used was “Users fled to Google DNS during the outage.”

iPad: two weeks later

May 14th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | 1 Comment | Filed in Technology

I have owned the 3G iPad for two weeks now, and I still love it. It has come in handy in several situations that I never would have thought about using such a device before. There were lots of apps available for the launch of the wifi version but I have been seeing even more now that the 3G version is out. No doubt that we will be seeing more to come.

Adobe: “We never abandoned Apple.”

May 14th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | 1 Comment | Filed in Technology

Adobe is saying that they never abandoned Apple according to a new interview with co-founder and co-chairman Chuck Geschke. This may be true, but they have certainly let the platform sit on the back burner. CS5 was only recently released and is finally Intel-only. It took Adobe ages to have a Universal Binary product out, and reviews of CS4 were that it was buggy & slow, in addition to being pretty expensive. Comments here echo that as well.

Most of the drama is surrounding the lack of Flash on the iPhone & iPad. As someone that has had an iPhone since the original release date, I can say that I don’t miss Flash at all. Adobe has had *years* to demonstrate a usable version of Flash on a mobile device and they simply haven’t done it. I’ve seen Flash partly working on Android but it was still a clunky and slow mess. I think that as more and more video sites move to HTML5 and increased H.264 adoption (Flash & Microsoft’s Silverlight are ‘wrappers’ for h.264 and other formats) it won’t be much of an issue anymore. 10 years ago, Flash was that annoying little pest of a plugin that you needed to play some games. Now it’s everywhere, and the overwhelming majority of what I see it used for are irritating web advertisements. I’m using AdBlock in Firefox, and click2flash on Safari to block Flash web ads. If anything has driven a nail in the coffin for Flash, it’s internet advertisers.

Verizon confirms it’s working on a tablet with Google.

May 12th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | 1 Comment | Filed in Technology

Verizon confirms it. “Verizon wireless CEO Lowell McAdam said in an interview published in The Wall Street Journal that though no specifics were available the new is confirmed.”

Hopefully this will be another nail in the coffin for the current crop of “Verizon iPhone” rumors. Google is cozying up to whoever they can in order to try to get ahead of Apple in certain markets. Apple has been pulling out some Microsoft like stunts, and Microsoft has turned around and done some Apple-esque stuff. The growth of Android is bad for Apple and Microsoft. Google & Verizon buddying up and trying to get a tablet out to compete with the iPad is a pretty bold move, considering what recently happened with the Nexus One. This should be interesting!
