Google can wipe apps off your Android device without your permission.

June 24th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/06/exercising-our-remote-application.html

This is interesting because of how quiet the tech blogs have been on the subject. The Google blog says that users are notified, but I can’t find any reports of users actually being notified. The application was just gone. Android blogs seem to be applauding this move, which surprises me considering how many of them hate Apple and claim the iPhone has awful security/etc. Seems strange to be against Apple but ok with Google wiping applications from your phone because they deem them malicious.
Also, the vetting process the App Store has in place is what should prevent malicious applications from reaching your device in the first place.

Google Voice for iPhone now here!

January 26th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

Well, sort of. As of today, Google Voice users can visit Google Voice with Safari on their iPhone and use it that way. It functions like a web application. I just tested it a few minutes ago and it worked as expected. It does display a dialog, but if you press “Call” it will do just that.

Also to note is that there seems to be yet another Google Voice access number. This new one has an Austin, TX area code. The previous one had a Carlsbad, CA area code. I don’t know if it cycles through them at random or tries to use one that’s physically closer to you, but they might use several to keep people from adding them as a favorite on MyFaves (T-Mobile) or A-List (AT&T) and getting unlimited minutes.

Give it a shot and let us know how it’s working for you!

Gmail and unsubscribing from mailing lists. Total failure?

July 24th, 2009 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

Techcrunch has an article about a new feature in Gmail.

“Gmail Tries To Make It Easier To Unsubscribe From Spam Newsletters, But Fails”

I am also very surprised that they did this. It will only send an unsubscribe request if it sees a certain piece of information in the header of the email. Spammers never actually include that header information! It’s something that is within proper mailing lists, like those run on Majordomo and Mailman.

AOL had a similar problem years ago (they might still have it, I don’t use AOL..) where they had the “Report Spam” button right next to delete. The same button would also delete, so users were simply clicking “Report Spam” on everything that they didn’t immediately recognize. People were reporting newsletters that they had signed up for as SPAM because they simply did not know how to unsubscribe.
That is exactly what Google has just done with Gmail. As the TC article notes, there is a way to have gmail unsubscribe you from mailing lists, but it seems that it’s a hidden feature.

Granted, unsubscribing is a common complaint about Mailman lists in particular. The link to unsubscribe is actually in the header information of the list.

headersHeader information from a Mailman list.

See the “List-Unsubscribe” information at the bottom? It’s a link that you can click on to unsubscribe. But.. the vast majority of people reading email these days have absolutely no idea how to even get to the header information, much less know that you’re supposed to look there for information on how to unsubscribe. Most people reply to the list with “Unsubscribe” (which was correct… if it was a majordomo list) or “ARGH GET ME OFF THIS LIST!” (or something like that!)
Now with Gmail, they can unsubscribe from legit mailing lists… and report the list as SPAM at the same time.

I think that’s a really really bad idea.

Google Voice applications for Android & BlackBerry!

July 15th, 2009 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

Google Voice now has applications for the BlackBerry and Android!

You can download them here.

I haven’t used Google Voice yet because it’s still in Beta and I don’t know anybody that has any invites they can pass along. It sounds like a fairly useful thing. “The new application improves the way you use your phone. You can get transcripts of your voicemail (see the video below) and archive and search all of the SMS text messages you send and receive. You can also use the service to make low-priced international calls and easily access Goog-411 directory assistance.”

Maybe I’ll get an invite one of these days. :) It would be useful to have one phone number to move around between devices.

Google’s OS Security Claims Called ‘idiotic’

July 9th, 2009 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

Well known security technologist Bruce Schneier has called Google’s claims about their new Chrome OS ‘idiotic.’ I’m inclined to agree with him. Google has done a pretty good job with security but their products aren’t immune to everything. One of the biggest issues that they still have not adequately addressed is the sheer volume of spam coming from gmail. Not spoofed gmail addresses. Actual spam coming straight from Google’s gmail servers from actual spammer accounts that have been created. The “captcha” images have been figured out by spam bots and basically rendered useless. And gmail is generally considered to be one of the more secure email services.

Also, making such a boastful claim is likely to draw the ire of spyware authors, who will be itching to be the first ones to get a self propagating virus onto the platform. But who knows, it might wind up with a pretty good security record. It depends on how fast the Google folks respond to the security issues and have patches available.
