Hulu on the iPhone/iPad!

June 29th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

This is awesome. Hulu was one of the biggest reasons that pundits kept saying Apple needed to have Flash on the iPhone and iPad.

Today hulu released the Hulu Plus app and it looks fantastic.

$9.99/mo. But we still see ads. I’m not too keen on seeing ads, especially since I’m paying for hulu and paying for the bandwidth now too. The app looks great and works great on my iPad and my iPhone 3GS. Excellent quality video.

“5 Big Blemishes for the Apple iPhone 4?” Uh, no.

June 25th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

I think Scott Moritz likes to stir up the honeypot for page views more than anything. This is the same guy that was spreading Verizon iPad rumors and calling it a “flop.”
Today’s ridiculous bait story is about the iPhone 4 and how there are ‘big blemishes.’

I’ll just touch on each silly point briefly.
No. 5: A Skimpy Camera – He talks about megapixels. Oooh. 5mp vs 8mp. I invite you to read The Megapixel Myth. Here’s a sample from the Droid Incredible with its supposed superior camera. And now here’s one from the inferior iPhone 4. Blemish #1: Busted.

No. 4: No Swype – Swype ships on a small handful of handsets on the market today. The Android version is a public beta, released only two weeks ago. And..Swype is working on an iPhone app. Blemish #2: Busted.

No. 3: Video Calling – It’s currently iPhone 4 and Wifi only, but that’s not Apple’s fault. They’ve made FaceTime an open standard, and it’s only a matter of time before we see apps using it. The WiFi restriction is going to be a carrier one, but that too should go away. Skype wants to use their own stuff, but they want in on iPhone 4. Blemish #4: Busted.

No. 2: iPhone 4 Shortages – Really? He really listed a manufacturing shortage as a problem with the iPhone 4? Come on. Let’s be realistic here. Apple and AT&T faced unprecedented demand for this product. They’re making them as fast as they can, and I’d hardly call the shortage a ‘blemish’ at all especially when it doesn’t reflect on the actual product in a negative light. Blemish #4: BUSTED.

No. 1: No Verizon iPhone. – Oh boy. Here we go again. This has nothing at all to do with the actual product. The “Verizon iPhone” has been nothing more than an investors dream and clever way of manipulating stock prices. As part of an FCC deal, Verizon is dumping off a lot of the old Alltel network to AT&T which will add plenty of room for new iPhone customers in areas previously unserved by AT&T. Verizon has also hinted that it may end unlimited data plans as well. But the bottom line is that his No. 1 “blemish” has nothing to do with the actual iPhone 4 itself. Blemish #1: BUSTED.

So far, the biggest complaints about the iPhone 4 have been that you can lose some signal if you hold it a certain way (this is not new with cell phones) and the glass can break, just like many things will if you drop them onto a concrete floor. The other reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and the folks that I know that were lucky enough to get one love it so far.

iOS 4: installing now…

June 21st, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

I’m a little late to the party because I had to be at work all day, but I’m installing iOS 4 right now.

Apple still uses Akamai for content delivery, so iTunes should have no problem downloading the updates. The iPhone 4 pre-order system? Not so much.

And hey, it’s already done!

My entire iOS 4 install time, including download? About 15 minutes. I’m going to go play with it now and make a bunch of folders on my 3GS.

iOS 4: Release time is reported to be 0900 Pacific Time.

June 21st, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

The QuickPwn folks are reporting that Apple intends to open the floodgates at 9:00 AM Pacific Time.

iTunes doesn’t just use “Apple servers” for stuff like this, though. Updates like this will be pushed out through the Akamai CDN (Content Delivery Network) which is designed to handle high loads.

This does mean that I won’t get to update my phone before I go to work, which is sort of disappointing. Then again, I’ve waited this long, so a few more hours won’t matter. Right? :)

A few pre-iOS4 tips:
* If you don’t have iTunes 9.2, download it first.
* Might as well go ahead and sync your phone. Make sure there’s a good backup.
* Power cycle the phone. (Won’t hurt..)
* Ensure that you have updated your applications. Developers might find a few bugs here and there once the public at large starts using iOS 4, so expect a few more updates for things over the next few days.
* Have fun! This is the most important step.

Cheers!

iOS 4: Coming any minute now…

That “Check for Update” button. Oh yes, I will click it… probably every 5 minutes…

…until it lets me download iOS 4.
