Dog in lap = bad idea.

June 17th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Life

It seems that it’s become popular once again to drive around with a pocket dog (small breeds) on your lap while driving.

This is a REALLY bad idea. Why? Very simple – if your airbag deploys for some reason, guess what is going to absorb the blow? Yep, the dog will absorb the shock. It will very likely be smooshed between you and the airbag. Not something you want to have happen to your pet.
Having the pet in the front passenger seat can be dangerous as well. Airbags deploy at speeds of up to 200mph. That’s worse than having Mike Tyson punch Fido square in the face. The folks at RuffRider also suggest not having your pets in the front seat. They note that the NTSB doesn’t have stats on how many pets were killed in auto accidents, but that’s probably because it’s not even reported. In the fire service, we have seen it happen, unfortunately.

So, keep the pets in the back seat. It’s safer for them and safer for you.

Is your Toyota Prius safe? Probably.

March 13th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

There’s been a whole lot of news recently about potential problems with the Toyota Prius hybrid. But psychologists are saying that psychology might have a lot to do with it. “In just the first 10 weeks of this year, 272 complaints have been filed nationwide for speed control problems with the Prius, according to an Associated Press analysis of unverified complaints received by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

By comparison, only 74 complaints were filed in all of last year, and just eight the year before that.”

And even worse, there’s now the very real possibility that one of the more recent events might have been a staged hoax, a la “Balloon Boy.” Investigators face many questions about the whole issue.

If you’re worried about your Prius, bring it to the Toyota dealer. They’ve been doing a great job of checking the vehicles out. While the chances of hundreds of vehicles experiencing the same bizarre malfunction is possible, it’s statistically unlikely…fortunately. It did happen to the Microsoft Zune, though.

For what it’s worth, I don’t own a Toyota, and I’m not a Toyota employee.

Good article about the “Nigerian scam.”

January 2nd, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Life

The CEO of the company that makes anti-phishing software called “Online Armor” had an interesting Skype chat with someone trying to pull a “Nigerian scam.”

Here’s the link – Interesting read, and the scammer actually had a sense of humor.

if someone emails/skype chats/IMs you out of the blue saying they have an important business transaction and they need your help, it’s a scam. Never send someone you don’t know money!

Are iPods dangerous?

July 22nd, 2009 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

KIRO 7 in Seattle has an article about iPods catching fire and causing burns.

Frankly, it’s a bunch of sensationalist garbage. They’re playing up the “What if a child was killed?” angle a bit too much. The article is too focused on the iPod because the iPod is a very popular product. It’s ignoring the fact that many other products in the household have similar batteries, such as your cell phone. There have been more incidents of burning/exploding cell phone batteries than there have been of melting iPods.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission does get a small quote, though: “After conducting its own preliminary investigation, the federal agency determined that, with more than 175 million iPods sold, “the number of incidents is extremely small in relation to the number of products produced, making the risk of injury very low.””
The chances are so far less than one in a million. Literally… less than one in a million.

There are quotes from someone in there that is claiming there’s a much more severe risk, but there is nothing to really back that up. There really isn’t enough energy in an iPod or its battery to spark a fire unless it’s next to some fairly flammable materials. What the article says leads me to believe that someone is gearing up to file a lawsuit against Apple in hopes of a nice out of court payout.

Your iPod is just fine. Just don’t sleep with it, like any other consumer product. Over 175,000,000 of the products have been sold, and there have been no fatalities and only a handful reports of actual injuries. This week in the United States, more children will be taken to emergency rooms after falling off of playground equipment than children who have been injured by iPods in the past year.

Relax.

Get rid of fire ants!

July 16th, 2009 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Life

How to get rid of fire ants! They’re nasty little pests, and the stings are painful. Be careful when you see a mound in the yard! Try to treat them with a fire ant killer product as soon as you see them appear. Another article that I found about treating individual mounds gives high marks to Spectracide. Even though the article is several years old, it’s still interesting to read.

And for heaven’s sake, if you see an ant mound…DO NOT go and poke it with a stick. You’ll just annoy the fire ants, and it’s likely that you’ll get stung!
