The final release is out! Get it here.
Windows 7 has been released to the public as well. Others have covered it much better than I have. I still recommend the “erase everything and install fresh” option.

August 20th is the last day to download the Windows 7 Release Candidate. You can still get license keys and can still install/use it, but starting March 1st, 2010, the product will shut down every two hours. It will also change your background and display “non genuine” messages starting June 1st, 2010.
The product will be for sale in October of this year, so there’s plenty of time to reinstall the Real Thing.

I’ve received a few survey type emails about both Windows 7 and Microsoft Security Essentials. I have to be honest, I have been very happy with both. Whether or not they’ll implement any of the suggestions, I do not know. But so far, both products seem to be quite nice. I haven’t had any big problems with Windows 7 although the Vista-ish dialog boxes for practically every system change are annoying.
The big release date is coming soon.

Like I said before, the PC that I have Windows 7 on is not the most modern machine. It actually gets a fairly low score on the graphics section. I decided to see what it’d do if I let Windows use the “Best Performance” option under visual settings.
What I got was kind of a nice surprise. It almost looks like Windows 2000 again, which is a lot more familiar. The user interface remains the same but it’s more stripped down and lacks the ‘shiny factor.’ That’s ok by me!
Here’s what it looks like now:

I just noticed this earlier – Microsoft Security Essentials will scan downloads in real time. I’m sure other anti virus applications do the same thing, but it’s nice to see that Microsoft didn’t screw this one up. You have visual feedback that it’s doing something while downloading your file, which is nice.

I was downloading Firefox 3.5, which came out recently. I’m going to write my thoughts on it a little bit later.
