“5 Big Blemishes for the Apple iPhone 4?” Uh, no.

June 25th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | Comments Off | Filed in Technology

I think Scott Moritz likes to stir up the honeypot for page views more than anything. This is the same guy that was spreading Verizon iPad rumors and calling it a “flop.”
Today’s ridiculous bait story is about the iPhone 4 and how there are ‘big blemishes.’

I’ll just touch on each silly point briefly.
No. 5: A Skimpy Camera – He talks about megapixels. Oooh. 5mp vs 8mp. I invite you to read The Megapixel Myth. Here’s a sample from the Droid Incredible with its supposed superior camera. And now here’s one from the inferior iPhone 4. Blemish #1: Busted.

No. 4: No Swype – Swype ships on a small handful of handsets on the market today. The Android version is a public beta, released only two weeks ago. And..Swype is working on an iPhone app. Blemish #2: Busted.

No. 3: Video Calling – It’s currently iPhone 4 and Wifi only, but that’s not Apple’s fault. They’ve made FaceTime an open standard, and it’s only a matter of time before we see apps using it. The WiFi restriction is going to be a carrier one, but that too should go away. Skype wants to use their own stuff, but they want in on iPhone 4. Blemish #4: Busted.

No. 2: iPhone 4 Shortages – Really? He really listed a manufacturing shortage as a problem with the iPhone 4? Come on. Let’s be realistic here. Apple and AT&T faced unprecedented demand for this product. They’re making them as fast as they can, and I’d hardly call the shortage a ‘blemish’ at all especially when it doesn’t reflect on the actual product in a negative light. Blemish #4: BUSTED.

No. 1: No Verizon iPhone. – Oh boy. Here we go again. This has nothing at all to do with the actual product. The “Verizon iPhone” has been nothing more than an investors dream and clever way of manipulating stock prices. As part of an FCC deal, Verizon is dumping off a lot of the old Alltel network to AT&T which will add plenty of room for new iPhone customers in areas previously unserved by AT&T. Verizon has also hinted that it may end unlimited data plans as well. But the bottom line is that his No. 1 “blemish” has nothing to do with the actual iPhone 4 itself. Blemish #1: BUSTED.

So far, the biggest complaints about the iPhone 4 have been that you can lose some signal if you hold it a certain way (this is not new with cell phones) and the glass can break, just like many things will if you drop them onto a concrete floor. The other reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and the folks that I know that were lucky enough to get one love it so far.

How AT&T can look awesome.

Very easy. Rollover Data. Right now people are upset that their new data plans will have a 2gb cap and they will exceed it. Just like minutes, data usage fluctuates for many people. How about allowing people to roll over a certain amount of data? Maybe cap it at 5gb. None of the other carriers have rollover, and AT&T could ward off a lot of bad press that way.

Come on, AT&T. What do you think?

Verizon confirms it’s working on a tablet with Google.

May 12th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | 1 Comment | Filed in Technology

Verizon confirms it. “Verizon wireless CEO Lowell McAdam said in an interview published in The Wall Street Journal that though no specifics were available the new is confirmed.”

Hopefully this will be another nail in the coffin for the current crop of “Verizon iPhone” rumors. Google is cozying up to whoever they can in order to try to get ahead of Apple in certain markets. Apple has been pulling out some Microsoft like stunts, and Microsoft has turned around and done some Apple-esque stuff. The growth of Android is bad for Apple and Microsoft. Google & Verizon buddying up and trying to get a tablet out to compete with the iPad is a pretty bold move, considering what recently happened with the Nexus One. This should be interesting!

Sprint axes Nexus One.

Sprint won’t be carrying the Nexus One after all. It was just a few weeks ago that we read the Nexus One would be going to Sprint too.

Things change quickly in the wireless industry, but this is the second big carrier that has decided to scrap Google’s flagship device.

iPad data speeds – how are they?

May 6th, 2010 by stuffaboutlife | 1 Comment | Filed in Technology

One word: Great!

Screenshot from my iPad showing download speeds.

These were done around Fort Worth, TX. We’re one of the first markets that AT&T is upgrading to the faster 7.2 HSPA speeds, so things will get even faster. Still, 3mbit down for an iPad out in the middle of a cow pasture isn’t bad.

Also interesting to note – the default format for screenshots on the iPad is PNG.

EDIT: The app I was using was showing the WiFi icon for everything. They have updated the application to show 3G/EDGE or WiFi. Small but nice change.
